Growing the STEM in CDA

With support from United Way of North Idaho’s Community Care Fund (CCF), Growing the STEM is helping students in Coeur d’Alene schools build a stronger foundation in math and science while developing leadership skills that last a lifetime.

Founded in 2017 by two CDA students, Growing the STEM has grown from just two programs to more than 40 in 14 schools, serving over 900 students and 100 youth coaches in the past year. Programs like Mathletes, STEM Club, STEAM Club, Chess Club, and STEM Book Club provide free, after-school opportunities that are fun, engaging, and accessible to students of all ability levels.

By partnering directly with local schools, Growing the STEM creates learning spaces where 20–25 students per program feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. High school mentors play a key role in leading small groups and inspiring younger students—offering both meaningful volunteer opportunities and hands-on leadership experience.

The impact is clear:
  • After seven weeks in Mathletes, students reported a 25% increase in finding math “interesting” and a 16% increase in saying they “like doing math.”

  • 95% said Mathletes is exciting, and over 90% felt their math skills improved.

  • Principals have requested 53% more programs, underscoring the demand and value families see in STEM enrichment.

Importantly, Growing the STEM prioritizes access for ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households—families working hard but struggling to afford extras like tutoring or after-school programs. By focusing on Title I schools and keeping programs free, more children from low-income backgrounds are able to participate in opportunities that build confidence and open doors to future careers in STEM fields.

As our community continues to face academic challenges—only 36% of local 10th graders are on grade level in math compared to 64% in English—programs like Growing the STEM are filling a critical gap. Together with United Way’s Community Care Fund, they are helping ensure all students, regardless of income, can build the skills and confidence they need for long-term success.
