Sandpoint Teen Center: A Safe Space for Teens to Grow, Learn, and Thrive

After school in Bonner County, teens have a lot of choices—but not always safe, supportive spaces to spend their afternoons. That’s where the Sandpoint Teen Center comes in. Open to all students in grades 7–12, the center is a lifeline for teens across the community, especially those from families struggling to make ends meet. In a county where 42% of families earn less than the cost of living, the Teen Center ensures that no teen is turned away because of money.Sandpoint Youth Center Collage

Inside the Teen Center, every day is full of activity, creativity, and growth. Teens enjoy healthy snacks and hot meals, games and sports, STEM and art activities, and mentorship from staff and teen interns. The Culinary Program teaches teens to cook and share meals, while special events—like ping pong tournaments, painting projects, and holiday markets—give teens opportunities to explore new interests, take on responsibilities, and feel proud of their accomplishments.

The numbers tell a powerful story. During the 2024–25 school year, 766 unique teens visited the center for a total of 13,171 visits. From January to June 2025 alone, 556 teens took part in the programs, surpassing mid-year goals. Teens also step into leadership roles: 32 teen interns helped run daily activities, serve meals, and support their peers, gaining skills they can carry into school, work, and life.

Beyond the activities, the Teen Center is a place of safety, guidance, and support. Teens like Chris, Sarah, Lanie, and Danielle have found mentors to turn to in tough moments—whether that’s learning to navigate social challenges, seeking advice, or finding a supportive community. The center’s “Rules of Respect” ensure every teen feels included and valued, including those with Autism or Down Syndrome.

None of this would be possible without the support of local schools, libraries, restaurants, and donors, as well as foundations and volunteers who help the Teen Center feed, mentor, and engage teens every day. Looking ahead, the Teen Center hopes to expand staffing, volunteers, and eventually secure a permanent home near the schools with a kitchen, game room, and indoor gym to keep teens active year-round.

The Sandpoint Teen Center shows what’s possible when a community invests in its teens: a place to play, learn, and grow that makes a real difference in their lives.
