What is Diaper Need?
Babies go through 6-10 diapers a day, which costs about $18 a week or $936 per year on diaper supplies for each child.
Services like WIC, Medicaid, and SNAP (“food stamps”) cannot be used to purchase diapers
55% of children under the age of 3 in Idaho live in poverty or low-income families; at least 1 out of every 3 families struggle to afford diapers.
Dirty diapers can make us sick and spread hepatitis A, viral meningitis, and sever bacterial diarrhea. Frequent diaper changes prevent painful diaper rash, loss of appetite, staph, urinary infections, or renal failure. A supply of clean diapers are required to attend most early childcare programs; without them, children miss out on educational opportunities and parents can’t attend work or school.
Diaper need is even more distressing to moms than not having enough food for their family. Women with diaper need report more difficulty with stress management, depression, and coping with trauma—which can negatively affect a child’s health and development.
The severe health and social consequences for babies and families who do not have access to diapers is a bum deal. Lack of enough diapers can lead to a whole mountain of problems for families in need: unhappy babies, unhealthy communities, under-educated toddlers, and under-employed adults. Something so basic as a diaper can actually have a big impact on a family’s ability to become financially self-sufficient.
